Dope Shit To Do- Easter Weekend
*this post may contain strong language. You were fucking warned*
Full disclosure, I will forever question the logic that pushes some event organisers to host a gig the same night as Rizwan Ibrahim. The man is a PR and booking genius; sometimes you aren’t even sure who’ll be performing but you’re like ‘fuck yeah where else would I be?’.That being said, this weekend all organisers get a pass because it’s JC’s death day and that gives us a bloody good excuse to drink. If that’s not good enough for you then here’s a list of shitty things in the world
-Uhuru is goddamn our president
-Raila might replace him (seriously wtf are these choices)
– Stella Nyanzi getting arrested because Museveni is a fuckwit #SanitaryPadsForGirls
– The hole in the ozone above Australia
-Kenya’s drought (ref: the event on Saturday)
Now that that’s out of the way here’s a curated list of dope shit you can do this weekend in Nairobi and some special mentions for out of town.
Friday the 14th
As I said earlier Riz and his team always come up with great gigs. The line-up for this is still rocking my world months after I first heard it. I mean Diplo AND Wankelmut!? Not to mention the darling of alternative music in Kenya Blinky Bill, my new favourite mwafrica Kace and Suraj who has been on a roll these past few months. Tickets are available here.
Deeper THAN you THINK
So maybe you’ve decided you don’t want to go for a mega rave to kick off your long weekend. Well then there’s the tried and tested formula of going to the alchemist because honestly there’s never been a bad show. Plus Maad Jikoni was fucking out of this world at his debut show so, definitely worth hitting it up
The new tree house is still iffy in our opinion. We’re still trying to figure out if it’s really a club or somewhere we’d like to go to pre-drink before going nuts at another club. Classy Underground MIGHT be able to change that but we’ll have to see how that goes before giving it a definite #dopeshit rating
If you haven’t already heard about the drought in Kenya then I have no idea WTF you’ve been up to but keeping up with the plight of our people isn’t one of them. Once again our government has failed at it’s duties and the population has to step up and ignore the fact that we pay taxes to mitigate this kind of shit from occurring. There’s much more detail about the Hunger Relief concert in a press briefing here.
Out of Town
The backpacker scene in Kenya is growing larger and larger (#fuckresorts #fuckhighaccomodationrates). One such new entrant to the scene is Buddha Tree Backpackers in Mtwapa built by a group of friends dedicated to good vibes and spreading them. They launch this Friday and if you’re in the area dodging Nairobi’s noxious odour and growing crime statistics we fully insist on you going there
Tiwi Easter Break and F.E.A.S.T
I don’t know much about this event tbh but I got an invite to it from Jaaz Odongo and if that doesn’t count as his seal of approval then our president is competent our police tame and our justice system fair. Also FEAST doesn’t refer to you stuffing your face with sea food but to the Frisbee East African Sand Tournament (a stretch I know but it works.)
The creek club is a hidden little gem of a place right on Takaungu creek. Once Eddie Grey is done being Maad Jikoni on Friday the 14th he jets down to Kilifi to give the coast deadly jazz vibes! The Scrapers area local band from Kilifi and if they’re the same band as the Barrel Bottom Scrapers then fuck yes they are great!
Wankelmut and Jinku in Kilifi (Jacobx2)
After absolutely blowing everyone’s minds in Nairobi (Wankelmut) and in Mtwapa (Jinku) these two masters of bpm craft ™ they head down to Kilifi for another creekside rager at Distant Relatives Kilifi. If you’re in Watamu, Malindi, screw it even Lamu make your way over to DR for the second last night of the long weekend. Someone told me that their mirraa shots will be endless and the Monday morning bloody marries are slated to be extra bloody.
edit: fvck yeah we hear Enchan is also playing in Kilifi so…there’s that!
